Then how does dead stretching work? Wouldn't your ear just stay the same size as the plug you were currently wearing?

You lube up the plug in the next size and slip it in. The lobe stretches to fit around the new plug.
    Have: 2g lobes (11/11/12); L 16g conch (07/27/12); 14g VCH (09/01/12) | Next: stretch ALL the things! (lobes: 1g; VCH: 12g)
Also Want: 8g septum, outer labia, nipples; too many tattoo ideas for my own good; goal size for lobes = 1/2" - 5/8"
Is it weird that I love piercing crusties...?

That just sounds painful. I tried to dead stretch from a 18g to a 16g once and thought my ear was going to fall off. ps I'm still a 18g, if that.

No, because even having jewellery in (whatever the material, but it's a safe bet it would be metal or glass, if you're stretching correctly), would self-stretch to some degree, even from a relatively lightweight material. Oil massages, playing with plugs all help when dead-stretching, wearing solid metal plugs is personal choice (but yes, it's safe to say it almost always makes stretching quicker).
Current: Double nostrils, philtrum, nipple. Various cartilage, 9/16'' lobes.
Retired: Nipple, navel x4, wrist, nape, MD, tongue web x2, lower lip piercings x4, nostril, helix, lobe piercings, septum, cheek piercings.
    4 tattoos.

What is my life for and what am I going to do with it? I don't know and I'm afraid. I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want.

No pain should ever be involved, if there's even resistance then it's not ready to stretch.

That's why I'm still an 18g. They've been pierced for over 10 years but they do not want to stretch.

Are you playing with them, massaging them, oiling them etc?

Your ears will loosen up on their own over time, I've dead-stretched since 4G and never had any pain. Happens very slowly for me though, usually I have to wait about 4 months between sizes.
    I'm Lindsay.
    Piercings:
Ears: Right conch, left conch, left double helix, 1/2" lobes.
Other: Both nostrils, septum, VCH, navel
RIP: Left eyebrow, right double tragus
    7 tattoos!

    How did you do it?

My dead-stretching method: when lobes are happy and can be comfortably played with and gently pulled on, start doing just that. Massage daily with jojoba oil or holey butt'r. Wear solid steel jewellery.
After MINIMUM 4 weeks of this, have a hot bath or shower, have a good oily lobe massage (so lobes are warm and relaxed and slippy). Take next-size-up round-ended plug, warm it in hands and lubricate with oil, see if lobe will accept it. Sometimes a gentle wiggle works better than a straight push.
If it won't go, continue lobe love routine for another week before trying again.

Never force anything, never cause pain.

One other thing - I don't recommend stretching with externally threaded jewellery (eg a standard labret stud) as you can rip hell out of the fistula. Unless the thread is covered by a concave or internally threaded insertion pin.
Septum bullets are ideal for small sizes.

what's a few seconds of pain for a lifetime of shiny?

    Both lobes 1/2", 5mm, 1.6mm
Left rook & 5mm helix punch
Right helix x2 & forward helix
    VCH, 5mm tongue

Aww, is wearing steel that important? Really don't care for metal plugs, especially steel since I don't know how my ears would react to it. I suppose once it's all healed up I could wear stone instead.
