Well they would usually be pierced with surface bars. They look rather nice but the chance of rejection is farely high. Do you have a few piercings?

In my opinion then i think you would be waisting your time.... if your body is not used to healing piercings it will most definatley reject something like a hip piercing :(

Might be handy to ask around your friends for piercers they trust/know. Check a few out, find some phone numbers and ask about their experience with surface piercings. Not just how many have they performed, but what jewellery do they use, have they had a lot of them successfully healed, can they talk you through the procedure and appropriate aftercare.
It's a good thing to do as surface piercings are a bit complicated and there are a lot of piercers out there who don't have the training to do them, but will anyway.
I would say that surface staples are your best bet on a hip piercing. Make sure the jewellery is NOT a straight barbell or a curved barbell. It's pretty much guaranteed that that type of jewellery will reject quick speedily.
Check out other piercing websites for help and advice too about what you can expect.
They're a pretty big piercing in my opinion that requires a lot of thought. The chances of rejection are quite high so you may well be left with scars in that area.
There's so much to know that it's impossible to outline it all for you. But research, research, research and as spike says, your body needs experience healing piercings.
