I would wash it with an unscented soap for a few days to keep it nice and clean and wash off the plasma (the stuff that makes the tattoo seem slimy). Leave to dry then apply your bepanthen. Hope that helps.

i know this is going to sound like a really stupid question, but i'm only on my first tattoo and i'm learning. lol. How do i know when its healed? Is it basically when it stops scabbing/being peely and itching? or is it just like after 2 weeks type of thing? I've had mine for a week now.

    Hi MetalMouse,

i stop applying creams etc when it has finished scabbing and looks healed.

However it takes a while for your skin to totally heal, that time is different for each person due to differences in how fast the body heals itself, how much work was done, where the tattoo is etc.

So i always go very careful with my tattoos for a couple of months, limiting sun exposure etc.

I just got my tattoo yesterday, and I'm using bepanthen on it, but whenever I put it on it seems to aggravate it, I think mainly because of me rubbing it in. Is this normal? (btw, by aggravated I mean it feels a bit sore afterwards)

EDIT also, roughly how often should I be putting cream on it? I'm going with every 3 hours or so, is this too often?

I only put the cream on mine when I got up, after dinner, and before I went to bed. It should only be a thin layer you put on, and rub it in gently.

I used it twice a day when i had mine, and i wouldn't say it hurt when i did it but i could definitely feel it for a couple days. it was kind of tender. Just try to rub it in gently making sure you dont knock any scabs off when it starts scabbing.

I used bepanthen 2 or 3 times a day, a thin layer just gently spread over, my tattoo didn't really scab as such, it got a bit flaky especially where it had gone over the old tattoo. After 4 days I switched to a light moisturiser which I put on any time it felt dry and it's turned out perfect as far as I can tell (need to get another pic taken of it and I'll have a really good look over it to see if any touch ups are needed but it seems fine).

I've just finished about 32 hours on my sleeve, done over 6 sessions. I was wrapped in clingfilm on leaving the studio, washed and changed the clingfilm before going to bed, using a light smear of tattoo aftercare balm.

On the heavy tattooing days I washed and changed the clingfilm and re-balmed for the full second day sleeping in it a second night. All the gooey stuff comes out with the clingfilm, therefore no scabbing.

On lighter tattooing days I treated day 3 as day 2 i.e no clingfilm for a second day as no weeping. On days 3 and 4 I lightly smeared bepanthen 3 times a day, then on day 5 I moisturised as needed, and on day 6 I heavily moisturised before jumping in the shower, the whole flaky stuff just gently rubs off with no picking. Don't force the rubbing off of the flaky stuff if it's not ready, leave it another day.

Moisturise as required for the next few days. My best moisturiser is Aveeno with Oat complex, for itchy skin - works at not making it itchy :o)

    Happy healing

Oh and as a P.S My tattoo is heavily black, which in some areas remains raised in my skin for some days/weeks after - I've now found taking Claritin Allergy tablets helps it all settle down much quicker.

Thanks I've not got pics done of the full thing yet - last session (Friday) was a full length of it pulling the piece together, playing and touching up session so there's a lot of very fresh black that needs to settle down. Pics will be coming tho as I'm chuffed :o)
