It must be a genetic thing, I'm not really ginger, I have auburn thick hair and a pale complexion, I don't think my body has ever tanned unless it got sunburnt first so maybe it has something to do with genes. I know I'll never bleach my hair as I like having the option of going back to my natural colour while I still have it.

My natural hair takes red like no one's business by doesnt keep it, no matter the brand. Usually have to redo it once a month. But I got bored with "typical" colors (if you can call radioactive fire engine red natural) and so I've been playing with blues and purples. The blue was ok... Ion lasted about 3-4 weeks, fading to a decent shade of turquoise that I tolerated. This purple is lasting like no one's business... So happy. The blue in the same brand didn't take at all... Huh

The lady who washed my hair just went "... Wow. You did want it postbox coloured right?". I need to redye it soon now that I have a job that will let me.
Thanks. ^_^ I can;t help but think I look a little like an anthropomorphised My Little Pony though, huh. =P

Ooh, interesting, I always thought redheads were advised against dying their hair? Shows what I know! People are always really surprised how dark my hair hair given how bright I can get the colours. Don't get me wrong, I have the bleach the bejeebus out of it, but even my hairdresser was surprised at how well my hair lifts (I used to be peroxide blonde before I went weird colours). I know a lot of people with hair my colour who have to bleach it multiple times to get it as light as mine, whereas mine (fortunately) usually only takes one application.

Are you going to go back to pillarbox red?

What brands do you use? I find red based colours stick much better than blue based ones. That said, SFX purple hangs around for ~six months (no joke) and their Blue Velvet I can get to last for a couple of months (although it fades to a kind of grimy grey colour which isn't pretty). Currently have Crazy Colour Hot Purple and SFX Cupcake Pink in (and the pink has taken much more evenly/vibrantly).

Talking of, here's the latest colour. Looks a bit washed out, but that's just the light/camera (it's also pink at the front). Eh, it's nice but every time I use Crazy Colour it makes me remember why SFX is the best (they have my favourite purple colour and it just generally looks amazing).

I REALLY like it it's making me miss full-head coloured hair :P

for the moment, I am content with my red/blue chunk - that is accidentally rainbow nobody can believe i did it myself which is a massive compliment

You're as ginger as the day is long. Don't try and hide it :P

Meh, I call most shades of red ginger tbh. I like reclaiming the word back from it being an insult.

My hair has been anything (naturally) from "strawberry blond" to a darker red/auburn but I've always called it red or ginger.

My natural now is still ginger just yet another variation of it haha! I've no idea what it is atm but it seems more ashy than normal, hence why doing my roots can be a pain.

So many myths about ginger hair, can't dye it, won't take dye, won't take bleach, your pits and bits are always ginger too, you're always pale, never tan, always have freckles, it's thicker than normal hair and on and on and on lol!

I've tried every box brand, Vidal Sasoon, Paul Mitchell, and Ion. Vidal Sasoon did the best.

Thanks! I've not tried this purple before (I had half a bottle of the pink hanging around from about three and a half years ago, hah). Needed topping up as somehow all the red disappeared and it was very much blue after the first application? =S

But, yeah, appart from the 'inbetween' stages, I've only not had a full head of colour once in the last six years; and that was this summer just gone. Peroxide blonde and a dark, magenta fringe. It was nice, but I much prefer a full head. =P

I missed the pic, Jester it's a lovely shade! I think there hasn't been a colour I've not gone to in the past 20 years except my own haha, hence having the break. I keep wondering if I'll snap one day!

I loved SFX dyes on my hair, they last SO well especially when you don't use shampoo ^_^
