    Thanks guys.

Had 2 very different and interesting experiences today.

I went to a hairdressers that did my last colour 4 years ago (I went from all dark brown/black) to having the black evened out and a bleached section put in that was dyed bright red. I maintained this over the last 4 years mainly just doing roots but occasionally going a full colour as well.

Over the past 4 months or so I've been giving consideration to growing my hair as long as I can and getting it to a more natural colour. My last natural colour as I remember it was a mid ginger colour but my roots are showing I've gone a lot paler! Upkeep at this length and style is a nightmare and it's driving me mad.

So I went in and it was dead, 1 hairdresser doing 1 clients hair. He walked over and said "yes??" I quickly explained what I desired and he said it could be lifted and a colour put over, he asked if I wanted it cut and I said ideally no not really. He then went on to say that they would have to cut it regardless and when did I want to book in. At this point I just wanted out so I said to provisionally book me in for monday and if I couldn't make it, I'd let him know in the next hour or so. He shoved a card in my hand and I asked what would actually be involved just to be told that "Gemma" would tell me on monday, I also had to ask how much it would be and he looked over the price list and faffed with a calculator and said "around 120".

Needless to say I walked out and went right round the corner to Toni and Guy lol! I was warmly welcomed by their receptionist who I explained my needs to and she asked me to stay where I was, she quickly came back and asked if I could wait for 10-15 mins then the colour stylist could have a chat with me. We (bf was with me) were shown seats and offered drinks, she apologised for my wait as there was only 1 colour stylist in. People were busy and clients were being well attended to, atmosphere seemed lovely and I filled in a form.

The colour stylist came over and spent a good 5-10mins asking me what I wanted and what she would be able to do for me, she took a strand test and did a skin test on me and explained that she would ring me later today (still waiting...) to explain what to expect, what she could do etc. Nothing was rushed, everyone was pleasant and I was booked in.

Pretty obvious who is getting my custom! Have already rang Regis and clearly told them that I'm going elsewhere after having a full consultation. He didn't sound in the least bit bothered.

As I thought it's going to take a while to get back near to my own colour and I will have some funky roots in the meantime. She reckons first time around it will lift about 4 shades to a dark/choc brown and will lift the orange out and dye it to match or do a colour overall to balance. She will have to take some length off and clearly explained why (not all the nonsense of damage and it growing better etc) but that the colour is so heavily saturated that it will very likely be extremely hard to lift out, she also showed me how much would go and tbh it's not much in the grand scheme of things. She was also very considerate and very understanding of me wanting to keep as much length as possible. After 2-3 months I can go back and get it lifted again and see where we're at

I know this is boring but I kinda wanna document it haha!

Thanks! I'll keep everyone updated. I'm booked in for Monday and yeah it's a shame cos when I went 4 years ago Regis were amazing but it comes down to the person really and I know she doesn't work there anymore which is a shame. But I have a lot of confidence in this stylist. I know it'll be expensive but tbh in the past 4 years or so I've probably spent less than 100 on my hair including colouring, cuts and conditioning treatments so it's not too bad overall

    Update on colour correction.

She rang me late evening and apologised for the wait but she was very busy. She said the strand test went well and it actually got it back to a dark coppery colour so a little better than she expected. However as she said the ends were still very dark and would have to come off as leaving bleach/stripper on them for longer would simply fry them anyway and take aaaages.

Then the scary bit lol! She said she had worked out everything she needed to do and include a minimal trim in with it as well and said what it would normally cost, however....now comes the lovely long hair charge which (as with other places I've heard) for colours and especially colour correction and my length means double. She was mega apologetic and said if she could bring the cost down on the day she would lol! I said it was ok and just about in my budget and she said she looked forward to seeing me and if in the meantime I had any questions just to ring back.

So there we go, booked in for 11.30am Monday for some slight changes but as little damage to my hair as possible. I did look into the cost of a good colour stripper, bleach bath, colour and cost of a trim and it's coming in at not far off what I'm being charged by a top senior hair colour tech so I'm happy to pay someone else to do it! Also I have to factor in that once I am near my goal colour maintenance will be extremely easy/cheap and in time (several years) could be ditched.

    I second this! Colours lovely.

I need to redye mine even though i should really put the money to better use but I cannot stand my roots anymore. Ive got it to a lovely auburn colour then ive got these horrible dull mousy brown roots that looks awful. Only thing i hate about having red tones. I really need to cut my fringe too.

Have i gone mad? Im afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But i'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.
