Heres a big load of info I posted in a myspace bulletin (thanks to dead_inside7 )
It contains HTML
and i used it to raise awareness and to try and get people to sign the petition

Ok basically piercing guns (such as those used in Claire's accessories stores) are an insult to body piercing and an extremely unhygienic way to carry out a piercing.
Body piercing should be carried out with a needle, in a clean and sterile environment (not the middle of a store with loads of people walking about!!) and with sterilised jewellery and equipment.
I shall list below the reasons why piercing guns are unsuitable for body piercing:

1) Forcing a more or less blunt stud through your flesh causes scar tissue and greater pressure around the surrounding tissue whereas cannula needles cut a neat little hole which means a less aggravating healing period and, in a majority of cases, a faster healing time.

2) Studs used in piercing guns are unsuitable in both size and material and may cause allergic reactions to the metal.

3) The 'butterflies' used on the backs of studs are also unsuitable for a healing piercing and collect bacteria and dirt which the piercing remains exposed to. It is also very easy for hair to get wrapped around the stud which will just aggravate the piercing even more.

4) Proper body jewellery comes in blister packaged seals and so are not exposed to any kind of airborne or general bacteria prior to use and are treated in an autoclave which reaches extreme temperatures in order to properly sterilise (not just clean) the jewellery and any equipment such as clamps before use on a customer.

5) Studs cannot be autoclaved as they are too flimsy a material and so may have bacteria on them. The guns themselves are also un-autoclaveable and so there is no proper sterilisation between customers - this has led in extreme cases in the past to the passing of HIV between customers.

Here is an example of what guns can do to the body.

6) It has been noted that some of the 'piercers' in places such as Claires Accessories do not even sometimes wear gloves, and without washing their hands, so anything on their hands could be transferred to your fresh new piercing which stands to be open to infection.
Professional piercers will wash their hands beforehand, wear gloves for marking the spot where you will be pierced and proceed to change gloves again before piercing.

7) Professional piercers spend many years learning how to pierce, Claires Accessories employee's learn from a half hour video...

8) Using a piercing gun to pierce ear cartilage and nose cartilage causes trauma to the surrounding tissue and causes inflammation and in some cases the cartilage may even 'shatter' and collapse. This is without all the added risks above.

9) People who pierce with guns will also give highly unsuitable aftercare advice to those they pierce, telling them to turn the stud in the piercing and giving an aftercare solution to clean the piercing with which is way too harsh to use on a new piercing.
Turning the stud in the piercing will just aggravate the piercing and cause a longer and unnecessarily painful healing period.
Professional piercers will urge you to clean your piercing with a sea salt solution (1/4 of a teaspoon of sea salt mixed with a mug of boiled water), a much more natural solution to clean with that will not take away any of the good bacteria helping to heal the piercing.

10) People who pierce with these guns also proceed to pierce the ears of underage children and babies, would you want children to be exposed to these risks and an untrained teenager to pierce their ears rather than a professional who truly knows what he's doing AND the hygiene precautions that come with safe body piercing? not much of a choice once you know the facts.

If you did read this far first of all thankyou, but the point of this bulletin is to spread the message about unsafe body piercing with guns and to urge you to sign this online petition against unsafe methods of piercing.

Thankyou
