I don't think you should have a "standard" or one size fits all bar for navels, just use what suits the individual....but I use more 12mms than 10mms generally :) 12mm really isn't a difficult size...

I have a two side lip rings as well as a centre ring, labret below that and a medusa and I barely notice them now. I have really tiny bar closures in the side ones though.

A general rule of thumb is to wait 3 times the healing time before stretching.

The retainers we used to do were 10mm, but they aren't suitable for an unhealed piercing (can't be autoclaved so won't be sterile) and acrylic is slightly porous so it can harbour all kinds of crap.
