Because it's not a ''proper'' baby yet in the sense that it's not viable, it's lungs and internal organs wouldn't be developed enough to survive. As far as I know, 24 weeks is officially the point where foetus can survive outside the womb.Quote:

24 weeks seems way too developed to be able to abort it.
It'd still only have a 30% chance of survival, and something like a 65% chance of being disabled/handicapped. 24 weeks is the absolute limit, and as far as I know, doctors/abortion clinics in the UK are a bit iffy about it.
At the end of the day, it's up to the woman carrying it. Such a late abortion would be extremely distressing I'd imagine.

I don't know how people do the whole birth the baby then give it up for adoption deal.
I imagine it'd be a lot harder to give it up after carrying it around for 9 months and having maternal instinct kick in.
Plus the idea of having my own child out in the world and knowing it's not me taking care of it would just be too hard.
When I was younger, I really wanted to have children.. In my teens, I thought children were horrible. Now I'm kind of in the middle.. I'd love to have children with the man I'm with, but I'm not sure if I'd make a good parent.

and at 24 weeks with all the medical intervention that can be done now, that child has every chance of survival. also at that late stage abortion wouldnt be done the same way, you would have to birth the child and the placenta. at early stages the featus is broken up, the skull crushed and extracted.
the heart starts to beat at pretty early on somthing like 5 weeks, so even at that stage ur killing a child then?
its not classified as a foetus until 12-13 weeks. So apparently up until 12-13 week mark, u arnt actualy killing a child.
tbh, i dont disagree with aborting, theres exceptions...... rape ect i understand why ppl have abortions.
to terminate it because his condom split, or the pill didnt work... imo is wrong. im sorry but it is, we all know these things can happen, so why arnt we useing double protection? if u use a condom, make sure shes on the pill or is gettin the injection or what ever. That's true, but if the 'end product' isn't something you want, or something you could bare to bring up or live with then it's the right choice for the sake of a child that might have grown up unloved and mistreated. Not all people think about adoption, and not all people are strong enough to carry a baby to term that they don't want growing inside them.Quote:

I'm personally of the opinion that abortion should be harder and adoption should be easier. Thousands of women in this country have had over FIVE abortions, hundreds over eight. There's no way that that's accidental, that's using abortion as a contraceptive method...which it really shouldn't be. And I'm not just slightly anti abortion because of the unborn baby, also because of the massive effect it can have on a woman. Yes having an unwanted baby can also have a huge effect but there are still options, like giving it up for adoption. If you're not ready to look after a child you should really be doubling up on contraception. Although I don't mean to preach or nag, everyone to their own, these are just my personal opinions and I'd never think negatively about someone for having an abortion. It's their choice.

But I don't want any children until I have a place of my own and secure with money etc

Dawn, do you think that a couple who would neglect or abuse their child, due to never really wanting it, should still go ahead raise it after the condom splits? As far as i'm concerned, i have sex for me, and whilst i understand it is mine and my partner's responsibility to protect against unwanted pregnancy, i don't feel it is our responsibility to allow an accident to inflict itself upon us for the rest of our lives.
I'm in agreement with caz about the state of the world. I honestly would prefer the human race seized to reproduce, die out, and let this world begin recovery from our actions.
Also, i have spent most of my life feeling pretty miserable, for no good reason. I've had an amazing upbringing with a wonderful family etc, yet being alive just doesn't particularly matter to me. So i wouldn't want to risk bringing someone into the world who thinks and feels anything like me.
At the moment, definitely not, having discussed this with my girlfriend, we'd go for the abortion, I wouldn't really consider the adoption route, growing up not knowing who your real parents are isn't a cool feeling at all, I could never pass that on, just as I could never justify giving a sh*t childhood to a kid.
If and when I'm in an appropriate state (financial, maturity, satisfied I've had enough fun in my life to spend the next x years not doing the stuff I'm used to.) then I'd definately consider it, if circumstances came to it I'd even adopt, sounds sort of contradictory to what I just said but it's different.
aslo what bout people who cant use both forms of contraceptive, like me? So far every variety of the PIll that ive tried does not agree with me and im sick of making myself ill trying to find one. Condoms work fine but should it spilt and the unthinkable happens, ill be getting an abortion.
at the moment i dont want children just yet, althiough im nearly 20, and alot of my friends younger than me have a child or more than one child i dont feel like i could handle being a mother just yet. id rather be a steady relationship and have enough money to be able to give my child a good life and feed myself too, if however something did happen and i was pregent when i wasnt ready, i wouldnt abort but id definatly struggle
I would get an abortion, 100%. Mainly due to selfishness if I'm honest, if I had a baby now it would ruin my life, mess up my education, mess up my parents' lives (they wouldn't just drop me, I know I'd end up depending on them massively), isolate me from people.. I would generally be a messed up kid and there is NO WAY I would let that happen due to something as simple as a condom split. On top of that, I know I would not be able to bring up a baby in the way it would need to be at 16, it wouldn't be fair on the child.

I have endometriosis and I've found the hormone only coil a godsend. The one I'm on is called Mirena, it's massively reduced the pain and the amount of endometrial lining so it's kinda put the endo on hold. Just a suggestion. Although I found Microgynon a good pill (even though my periods were still painful) so I can't guarantee it'll work as well for you. I'd also suggest asking if your GP has someone whose trained in female reproductive bits 'coz most doctors don't know much about endo and can be horribly insensitive about it and not very helpful because they seem to think it's just us girlies whining about a period. Good luck, it's a horrible thing to have. I'm so grateful I managed to sort mine.
I find that the female doctors in the practise are actually worse than some of the male ones - all my nice males docs have left.
Did you have to have surgery to insert it? I have a severe dislike of hospitals lol :biggrin:

I didn't mean a female one, I meant one whose had specialist training. So they actually know what endo is etc. You need a trained one to insert the coil anyway. And no it's not sugery, you don't even need anaesthetic. You just pop your legs up on braces, relax, it doesn't take very long to put in and it's not too painful, just like bad cramps. Then you have cramps for a couple of days and it's all done. The worst part is the awkwardness of having a doctor, a nurse and a training doctor studying your bits.Quote:

I'd like to comment that it's pretty rare for people to have an abortion that late into the pregnancy. Most of the foetuses I see at work are about 8-10 weeks old. The article is suggesting the foetuses older than 17 weeks are potentially alive post termination.
Yes, they can happen up to 24 weeks. However, the vast majority of these are carried out when there is a risk to the mother if they continued the pregnancy.
I was just having the "baby discussion" with my bf and his friend the other day.
My opinion is basically that until I am financially stable and I've done everything I want to do with my life (sky diving, breaking in horses, had a good career for a bit etc) then I don't want a child. I like the idea of being pregnant but i think too many people are in love with the idea of "being pregnant" and "having a baby" Whar I think a lot of people forget is that you're not just having a baby...it turns into a child, which can go horribly wrong if you're not a great parent...then it turns into a teenager which can go even worse if you weren't a great parent when it was a child.
I think I'll make a good parent even though I'm not maternal at all. I hate other people's children that run about and scream and are not disciplined. But I know if I had my own I would do it well and bring them up to be well mannered people in the same way I was brought up. And I know if I found out I was pregnant the maternal thing would kick in.
My boyfriend agrees that he'd like a family but I think we both want to enjoy the time we have with each other before kids come and ruin it. I like our alone time too much to even think about spoiling that in the future.
So basically what I'm saying is, if I got pregnant by accident, I'd probably be happy but I'm certainly not planning a baby. Lol
