I work with a girl and her flatmate works in lighting. Apparently, in situations such as last night, peoples faces are lit with a subtle blue light but obviously they couldn't do that for the debate as they would not want to be accused of subconsciously attempting to influence people, so their faces were lit differently. If you looked really carefully, there were no shadows or anything on their faces and that's what made them look shiny and flat.

(That or the huuuuge amount of makeup DC seemed to be wearing...!!)

That's really interesting. Does the subtle blue light add tone and contrast then? Or have I misunderstood.

You can do amazing things with light and make-up. In uni we could make people up so their parents didn't recognise them when they first walked on stage. Great fun.

I'm not really sure how it works....but she said that unusually, they were lit straight on (which she said must have been quite daunting for them, having a light shining straight into their faces) and that because of this, there were no shadows on their faces (from their hairline etc which you would naturally see) and that this is why they looked rather 2D and 'shiny' and generally weird!


EDIT: Oh and it was Hi Sushi on Russell Street. Its about £15 all you can eat and it's amazing! It's a gorgeous restaurant and it's always full of Japanese people which I think is always a good sign.
